Karahan Tepe sits in the Tektek Mountains of Şanlıurfa province, in southeastern Türkiye — a dry, rolling limestone landscape near the village of Keçili. It lies about 35 kilometres southeast of the city of Şanlıurfa and roughly 45 kilometres from its famous sister site, Göbekli Tepe, which puts both within the same easy day-trip region.

The bigger picture: the Taş Tepeler

Karahan Tepe is not an isolated hill. It is one of a dozen Neolithic sites scattered across the Şanlıurfa plateau, together known as the Taş Tepeler — the "Stone Hills." Göbekli Tepe is the most famous; Karahan Tepe is the largest and most spectacular of the rest. Understanding the region as a constellation, rather than a single site, is the key to seeing what makes it so important.

How to get there

The base for any visit is Şanlıurfa (Urfa), a large city with its own airport (GAP / GNY) served by domestic flights from Istanbul and Ankara. From Şanlıurfa, Karahan Tepe is roughly an hour's drive southeast by car or tour vehicle. There is no practical public transport to the site itself, so you'll need a car, a driver, or — most rewarding — a guided tour that puts the ruins in context. The site has a visitor path and shade structures, but few services; bring water and sun cover.

One base — Şanlıurfa — puts Göbekli Tepe, Karahan Tepe, and the museum all within reach in a single trip.

See it with context

Karahan Tepe rewards a knowledgeable guide. Much of what makes it extraordinary — the descent into the Pillar Room, the head watching the chamber, the meaning behind the carvings — is easy to miss without someone to read it for you. We run small-group expeditions through Karahan Tepe, Göbekli Tepe and the wider Taş Tepeler region, built for people who want real historical depth. See how to visit, or plan a tour.
