Structure AC — Key Facts
Structure AC is the quiet outlier of Karahan Tepe — a small, deliberately capped structure set apart from the central complex, whose interior the excavators had not yet fully opened when it was first published. It is a useful test of intellectual honesty: there is a real temptation to fill its silence with speculation, and we don’t.
What we know
In Karul’s 2021 report, Structure AC is a small structure about 5.5 metres in diameter, roughly 20 metres northeast of the central AA/AB/AD group.[1] Its southern half is cut from the living bedrock; its northern half is formed of set vertical stones; and the whole was sealed by a large flat-stone cover limited to the structure itself. At the time of publication its inner fill had not been fully excavated or reported — so its contents, and any pillars or imagery it might hold, remain unknown.
A structure defined by its cover
What makes AC notable is precisely that it was closed. The deliberate capping mirrors the pattern of intentional burial documented for the central rooms (see They Buried Their Temple), but here it seals a small, peripheral building rather than a monumental chamber. Whether AC was covered for the same reasons, and at the same time, as the core structures is one of the site’s genuinely open questions.

How it fits the site
AC sits a short walk from the connected core of AB, AA and AD, marking the wider footprint of Karahan Tepe beyond its famous central chambers. Its position matters: it shows the built site extended outward in discrete, capped units, not just the one dramatic group that draws the cameras.
What was it for? — kept honest
We present AC exactly as reported: a bounded, deliberately covered structure of known size and position but unknown contents. Because its interior has not been published, we do not add pillars, carvings, or a function it has not been shown to have. When the fill is excavated and published, this page will be updated.
