The Sealed Chamber

There is a room at Karahan Tepe that no one has entered for roughly twelve thousand years — and this season, the archaeologists intend to. In one corner of Structure BH, on the site's Western Terrace, a small chamber was deliberately sealed shut with large flat stone slabs when the building was closed in antiquity. Partially exposed in 2025, it can't be dug the usual way — so in the 2026 season the team plans to lift the covering stones and go in from above.^[1]

What we know

Structure BH is the best-preserved building of Karahan's late phase — a rectilinear room roughly 9 × 7 m, with walls surviving up to about 3.5 m, two-tier benches, broken T-shaped pillars, burning traces, and a large stone vessel plumbed to a channel along the north wall.^[1] The sealed chamber is built into one of its corners. What makes it unusual is the closure itself: rather than simply filling with debris over time, it was capped with flat slabs — a deliberate act. Excavation director Prof. Necmi Karul has described BH as a building made “for a special purpose.”^[1]

Why open it from above

The chamber's entrance opens onto a shallow, delicate deposit, which makes a normal sideways excavation risky. The plan instead is to remove the covering stones and descend into the space from the top during the 2026 season, which runs into October.^[1] The care being taken is itself telling: a sealed, deliberately closed room raises the real possibility that objects or installations were left in place at the moment of closure — exactly the kind of undisturbed context archaeologists dream of.

Deliberate closure is a recurring theme here. The great chambers of the central complex — the Pillar Room and the Central Building — were filled and sealed in careful, staged layers, a practice explored in They Buried Their Temple. The BH chamber looks like another instance of the same behaviour: at Karahan Tepe, buildings were not just abandoned but put to rest. Whatever the slabs are protecting, the act of sealing it was meaningful to the people who did it.

What we don't know — yet

This is a story still being written, and we won't get ahead of it. We don't know what's inside: it could hold sculpture, vessels, deposits, a burial, or comparatively little. We don't know the chamber's exact dimensions or its precise relationship to the rest of BH, and none of it is formally published.
